Smart Earth Seeds Ships Historic First Rail Car of Camelina Oil to Vancouver

Congrats to Smart Earth Camelina Corporation for its historic first: shipping a rail car of Camelina oil from the Prairies to an aquaculture customer in Vancouver!

Smart Earth Seeds has spent the last 20 years developing the best Camelina varieties while continuing to work with growers to provide excellent production practices. Camelina, also known as false flax or gold-of-pleasure, is an oilseed that grows well under a wide range of climatic and soil conditions, making it a viable option for Prairie farmers and potentially the next “Made-in-Canada” crop of significance.

Camelina oil is particularly beneficial for and in high demand by the aquaculture feed market because it improves the Omega 3 | Omega 6 ratio in farmed fished and reduces the need to use marine-based fish oil in fish feed, therefore, creating a more sustainable feed option.

Smart Earth Seeds, a tenant at Innovation Place in Saskatoon, is the leading global Camelina enterprise and recently launched Cypress, a new Camelina variety with 40% larger seeds.
